Nicolas Rey Retrospective

Nicolas Rey (*1968) is a veritable phenomenon of cinema: An avantgardist whose work concerns political questions in a congenial way, but with irony and whim instead of becoming grumbly or a know-it-all. His first experimental movies are in production from 1993 on; his earliest publicly shown creative work is finished three years later (TERMINUS FOR YOU); Rey’s first major project, the essayistic travelling picture LES SOVIETS PLUS L’éLECTRICITé premiers in 2001. A direct connection leads from the memories and utopies of communism to the history of capital: SCHUSS! (2005) whose multipartite structure stands in direct contrast to the simple and concisely linear character of its predecessor. AUTREMENT, LA MOLUSSIE (2012, Rey found it necessary to learn German for its realization) synthesizes the earlier material into a mosaic-like structure that changes with each new presentation (the nine acts can be shown in any order), but every new combination can be viewed independently as a straightforward account of personal insight. Cinema before Nicolas Rey has seldom been smarter or more beautiful. In cooperation with the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig
