Pagan horror is about to make a comeback. Clear indications of this are Estonia’s NOVEMBER (2017) and the international anthology THE FIELD GUIDE TO EVIL (2018), celebrating its German premiere. But what kind of film describes this genre? Despite all the differences, recurring elements can be made out: a desolate landscape, an isolated group of people with a non-Christian value system, a supernatural or violent event. It is mostly a person from the city who is confronted with these elements. Around 1970 the first wave of such films began, especially on the British Isles. They cast a dark shadow onto the flower child movement of the time. Three independantly produced films are now the genre’s ‘Unholy Trinity’: WITCHFINDER GENERAL (1968), BLOOD ON SATAN’S CLAW (1971) and THE WICKER MAN (1973). We are showing the latter in the 2013 restored Final Cut version. A very special occasion is the German Premiere of the restored 4K version of the Finnish classic THE WHITE REINDEER (1952).
