Braunschweiger Kulturnacht: Film festival presents regional short films

Braunschweig's city centre will be transformed into a stage for one evening - the 14th Braunschweiger Kulturnacht will take place on Saturday 17 June. As part of the event, the Braunschweig International Film Festival (BIFF) will be showing a short film programme of eight films by up-and-coming regional filmmakers at the ASTOR Filmtheatre.

Discovering and enjoying art and culture at various locations in the city centre is the focus of the 14th Braunschweiger Kulturnacht. On Saturday, 17 June 2023, numerous artists, groups and associations will be presenting a diverse cultural programme in Braunschweig's city centre. The BIFF will be taking part again this year: The film festival will present the entertaining short film programme NORD SHORTS 2023 at the ASTOR Filmtheatre.

Supporting young talents

Eight new short films by young filmmakers from Lower Saxony, made in cooperation with the universities of Hannover, Hildesheim, Braunschweig and Salzgitter, will be screened. They were made as part of the cast&cut grant from the Stiftung Kulturregion Hannover and nordmedia.

"Supporting young filmmakers has long been a cause close to our hearts at BIFF. Every year, we put the spotlight on regional filmmakers with our Heimspiel series. Now we are especially pleased to be able to present the work of regional students at the Braunschweiger Kulturnacht and give them a platform," says Karina Gauerhof, co-festival director and head of the festival programme.

Cinematic Diversity of the North

The eight short films show the diversity of film production in the North. The films are inspiring, thought-provoking and sometimes irritating. They are about tradition and breaking taboos, fantastic worlds, the problems of robots in everyday life, memories of loss, conflicts between generations and first love.

The short film programme is about 90 minutes long and has been put together by the Film & Medienbüro Niedersachsen. It starts at 20:30 at the ASTOR Filmtheatre in Braunschweig.

About the short films

EAT YOUR RICE

Germany 2021, 6 Min., Directort: Raka Suwandhi, Dimas Suwandhi

There is an Indonesian saying: "Eat your rice or it will cry". But the young man prefers grilled chicken wings and spurns the rice. And it comes as it must. Rice cooked with love and time is pitted against wings prepared quickly and easily. Tradition versus modernity. EAT YOUR RICE tries to build a bridge between these two worlds, skilfully crossing the borders between comedy and horror.

A seamstress receives a strange commission: to sew a cloak made entirely of moth wings. A work of fragile beauty is painstakingly created, and with it a delicate bond between two lonely souls. But as soon as the work is finished, the person who commissioned it disappears. As she searches for him, she discovers his secret: the cloak holds one last hope - an escape into the freedom of the moonlight.

Is it possible to escape the artificial lights of the world? Or is her employer a madman, crazy enough to throw himself to his death - for a mere fantasy? The dressmaker finds no peace. She answers the call of his dream and sews a new coat for herself.

The film is about the death of a loved one and the what-ifs that often accompany such a loss. We see a tomato and hear an old lady's thoughts as she remembers who she has lost. She talks about the tomatoes in her garden and how, on a fateful day, they were not ripe.

Katharina is the hospital clown Fredda Meyer. While working at the children's hospital, she has become very fond of Moritz, a twelve-year-old boy suffering from cancer. Moritz will die soon. Fredda stays and is there for the parents, for the nurses, for the cleaning staff and for Moritz. She makes jokes when no one can laugh anymore. She cries clown tears when everyone is frozen. She sings when everyone is silent. Fredda breaks the taboos and conventions of how we deal with dying.

LIEBER PAPA, DEINE TOCHTER

Germany 2021, 17 min., Direction: Karoline Rößler

The film is told in an unusual setting: The platform for the film is the filmmaker's desktop, on which she writes emails to her father. There has been a conflict, an argument, and the daughter wants to talk again. The film is about social justice, equal opportunities and how two generations want the same things but cannot come together. The film is an attempt to find out how we talk to each other and how we need to talk to each other.
