Five years before the end of the GDR, claims to power in East Berlin are secured with the help of a ruthless system of control and surveillance. Stasi captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe), who is loyal to the line, is sent by Lieutenant Colonel Anton Grubitz (Ulrich Tukur) to investigate the celebrated playwright Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and his partner, the theatre star Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck). Wiesler hopes to further his career, but gets caught up in a maelstrom of fear and intrigue himself.

Director's Biography:Born in Cologne in 1973. Studied politics, philosophy and economics at Oxford University. Directing apprenticeship with Richard Attenborough and accepted at the HFF Munich.
