It is the first working day of Stéphane, who just arrived from Normandy, at the police station in a suburb of Paris. His two experienced colleagues show him the neighbourhood and its inhabitants: the Muslim Brothers, the self-proclaimed mayor, the circus people. Compromises and dubious business determine the life in the French banlieue, also for the policemen. During an unsuccessful arrest they are filmed by a drone... With a lot of energy and skill, Ladj Ly stages the escalating mechanism of poverty and violence. More than 150 years after the novel "Les Misérables" by Victor Hugo, not much has changed there.

Director's Biography:Born in 1980 near Paris. Long-term collaboration with the film collective Kourtrajmé and the artist JR. LES MISÉRABLES is his second feature film that received the Jury award at Cannes Film Festival 2019.
