A policeman goes to a remote island off the coast of Scotland to resolve the traceless disappearance of a girl. The village community reacts in a repellent way. Even the mother of the girl cloaks herself in silence. It soon becomes clear to the investigator that the island inhabitants practise a religion that with its free sexuality and pagan customs is not really consistent with Christian values. The movie audiences of the time reacted with almost complete incomprehension at the disconcerting camera angle and the unusual film score. Today THE WICKER MAN is considered as the central work of pagan horror. The film magazine Empire judges: ”The best British horror film ever made.”
