Dresden 1937: Kurt – short trousers, wide-open child's eyes – is shaped in these moments. He stares into the disturbing face of Eugen Hoffmann's sculpture "Girl with Blue Hair", lingers in front of works by Max Ernst, Kirchner, Klee, Kandinsky. A triumphant exhibition guide assures him that anyone can manage this kind of scrawl and also dutifully formulates the aesthetic theory that must be overcome in the following: "For art comes from skill." The young artist Kurt Barnert manages to escape from the GDR to the West. When he falls in love with the student Elizabeth, his life changes fundamentally.
